Sanitation Workers To Film Hip-Hop Dance PSA Called You Got LexServ’d

By: Harold Leeder

July 19, 2016

In an effort to better educate Lexington residents on the services they provide, sanitation workers decided to step up this week and announce a series of hip-hop dance PSA’s titled You Got LexServ’d. The videos aim to bring awareness to proper trash separation guidelines while also showcasing the sick dance moves of LexServ employee Rico and his crew The Trash Talkaz.

“We just want people to start putting their garbage and recycling in the appropriate containers,” said Rico. “I know it seems like Tops In Lex Magazine should go in the blue recycling bin, but since it’s not a real magazine it should actually just go in the trash can. Also, just because the Yellow Pages go straight from your yard to the garbage, they shouldn’t go in the yard waste bin. Also, why do they still make the Yellow Pages? Maybe I should dance about that.”

The videos will also inform residents about some of LexServ’s lesser known features, such as its LexCall 311 service. Calling 311 helps you receive information about all things related to garbage collection. An easy way to remember the number is to think of the 90’s band 311 , which was also total garbage. In addition to informing people about 311, the city hopes the videos will help differentiate 311 from other three digit numbers. You’ll never forget 911, but in case you do you can call 411. You call 811 before you dig, ya dig? Finally, you call 711 when you need a Slurpee.

The PSA’s will feature three original songs written specifically for You Got LexServ’d. The songs are “Recycler’s Delight,” “Roll (Your Herbie To The Curb And) Bounce,” and “Stomp The Yard Waste.” If the videos go well, other utility services are expected to  jump on board as well, starting with Kentucky Utilities’ Pay Your Light Bill 2: Electric Boogaloo.

The Real Winner Of Lexington’s Burger Week Is- UK’s Gill Heart Institute

By: Harold Leeder

July 18, 2016

Lexington’s 2nd Annual Burger Week wrapped up last night and waves of people, who stood in line all week to stuff their faces with $5 burgers at local restaurants, have now moved over to another long line. While the results have yet to be announced, the mob of people outside the building have made it pretty clear that the unofficial winner of this year’s Burger Week competition is UK’s Gill Heart Institute. Like a Walmart prepping for Black Friday, the cardiologists and staff are reportedly bracing for their busiest day of the year, “Blockage Monday.”

“We’ve learned that many Lexingtonians over the past 7 days have actually visited multiple burger joints EVERY single day, “explains cardiologist Dr Cole Esteral. “They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing here. Especially when these folks go on a 15 to 25 burger bender over the course of one week. It’s great for business though, so were not complaining,” finished the doctor as he made angioplasty balloon animals for the kids in the waiting room.

While Lexington Cardiology ran a “Buy 1 Stent, Get 1 Free” Groupon this week, the Gill Heart Institute just relied on good ol’ fashion word of mouth to mouth resuscitation to attract the masses.

“Yeah, we had quite a few people come through this year,” says Gill Heart nurse Jackie. “It puts a lot of pressure on our staff, but the participating restaurants rely on repeat business from this event after pretty much giving those burgers away. So if we don’t do our jobs, and drop the ball like we did during corndog week back in ’09, the restaurants won’t be seeing those customers back anytime soon either.”

Many other businesses were impacted by the Burger Week competition as well.  Restaurants that don’t serve burgers, such as Lexington’s vast array of pizza joints and many of our other health food stores, saw a sharp decrease in sales.

“The problem isn’t the buzz and excitement surrounding Burger Week or the low cost of the burgers. The problem is, with all these people eating burgers, they aren’t taking the time to eat anything healthy…like pizza,” said Little Caesars owner Pappy Julius.

Despite this year’s event being even bigger than last year, the Gill Heart Institute was better prepared to handle the heavy traffic, which minimized many of the issues they saw in 2015. While there were still some injuries reported from people pushing and shoving their way in, this year Lexington police were happy to report far fewer cardiac arrests.

Lexington One-Ups Louisville By Announcing Fivecastle Music Festival

By: Harold Leeder

July 15, 2016

The Forecastle Music Festival, now entering its 14th year, will take place this weekend in Waterfront Park up in Louisville, and frankly, Lexington officials have had enough of it. For the past fourteen years dirty hippies from all around Southern Indiana make the annual trek south for the Louisville music festival, and they bring their parents’ money with them – and now it’s Lexington’s turn to get a piece of that action.

Former Vice Mayor and avid clarinetist, Jim Gray, has helped form a task force for Lexington to get in on the tourism cash cow that is outdoor music festivals. The group has hit the ground running and plans to have their own startup festival, “Fivecastle”, begin later this weekend.

“Fivecastle – not only is it better than Forecastle, but it’s a full one better,” says Festival organizer Chris Cross.  “The festival will take place all over our fair city, on 5 different stages, that big castle out there on Versailles road, both White Castles, and a couple of the Castle Jewelry store locations.  If you like music, just come on over here.”

Cross loves the festival format, but feels that the Louisville based Forecastle has grown a little stagnant with booking acts over the last 7 years.  He opined, “Look, what Forecastle did a million years ago was great, but we think Kentucky is missing out on a whole new group of millennial hippies with their most recent lineup. I mean, who booked this one anyway, someone that was into music back in 2009?” Forecastle being headlined by the likes of the Avett Brothers, Dr. Dog, and Death Cab For Cutie has many asking, “What, was Jason Mraz busy?”

Fivecastle would certainly be breaking new ground here in central Kentucky given Lexington’s limited experience with hosting outdoor music festivals.  Lexington’s only previous attempts at hosting an outdoor music event would be that time Billy Gillispie parked his SUV right next to you at Keeneland with his windows down blasting “Wagon Wheel” on repeat for 3 hours or when Twitch and the Z-Rock morning crew did a live broadcast outside of Platinum Plus.

No one is expecting Fivecastle to be an overnight, runaway success. Forecastle has a huge head start and can hang their hat on media clippings like when Rolling Stone called Forecastle “one of the coolest festivals in America”. However, Fivecastle is already starting to see some buzz since Tops In Lex is hailing it as “another place for us to take photographs of rich white people”.

Bearded Bevin Actually Just Matt’s Non-Evil Twin Pat Bevin

By: Harold Leeder

July 14, 2016

Matt Bevin’s early 90’s George Michael beard was all the rage on Twitter Wednesday, but it turns out the bearded governor wasn’t Matt Bevin at all, but instead his non-evil twin Pat Bevin.

Sources tell us the bearded, easygoing, levelheaded and generally well liked Pat Bevin took the place of his twin brother Matt earlier this week, after he trapped Matt by placing a poor person’s Medicaid card under a cardboard box propped up by a stick.

This isn’t the first time the bearded, poised, rational and well respected Pat Bevin has played such a prank. When the twins were eleven, Pat Bevin almost convinced his teacher that he was Matt, but the teacher realized a ruse was underway when Pat went outside to enjoy recess, instead of staying in the classroom to complain about other students not doing their work.

As it’s only a matter of time before Matt Bevin escapes from his confinement, his bearded, sensible, reasonable and wise brother Pat hopes to act fast to undo some of Matt’s most controversial decisions as governor. Chief among Pat’s proposals are adding former First Lady Jane Beshear’s name to multiple buildings across the state, making entry into the Kentucky Colonels easier than applying for a Kroger Card, and replacing state pizza sponsor Papa John with his non-evil twin Papa Murphy, because being a good governor takes patience, and frankly we’re all sick of Papa John.

Burger Week Allows Lexington To Finally Reap The Rewards Of The Stockyard Fire

By: Harold Leeder

July 13, 2016

Lexington’s 2nd Annual Burger Week kicked off on Monday and according to officials, after yesterday’s dinner service, over three quarters of the beef that was salvaged from the February stockyard fire has been consumed. While the fire was tragic, the aftermath has proven to be both juicy and savory.

Officials say most of the preparations for this year’s festivities centered around evenly dividing up the pre-cooked beef supply that remained from the fire earlier this year. “The hardest part of our year was making sure everyone got their fair share of beef,” Organizer Dan Berger said. “We had to keep kicking the folks from the Applebee’s on Nicholasville Road out of line. It’s like ‘buddy, this isn’t even you’re neighborhood!'”cows

Among those not participating were all area Chick-Fil-A locations. Their attorneys advised them against participation since their main spokescows remain the USDA prime suspects in the ongoing arson investigation according to Lexington Police.

The increased availability of beef has led to some unusual entrants in this year’s festival. Yankee Candle attempted to put another feather in their cap by entering the ‘Called It Macaroni And Cheese Burger.’ Taco Bell attempted to get in on the action with a Burgerito, but the venture was a failure due to their cooks being unaccustomed to working with real beef.

Burger week seems to be getting good reviews so far. Jared Lorenzen was spotted celebrating by sampling burgers from five separate restaurants Tuesday night and, when we notified him it was Burger Week he responded, “What a great idea, that’s why I got these five burgers here. Do they do this monthly or…” Lorenzen trailed off as he took a bite from a Frisch’s Wildcat Bleu Burger. Chris Cross lobbied for his favorite burger place by telling patrons “You won’t get any hassle when you eat at White Castle.”

Trump Upset His Fundraiser Is At An Aviation Museum With No Private Jet Exhibit

By: Harold Leeder

July 12, 2016

One of the richest men in America, Billionaire Donald Trump, arrived in Lexington yesterday to attend a fundraising event for his self-funded campaign, despite the fact that he’s still a billionaire.  Supporters from the region attended the event put on by Joe and Kelly Craft, who we’d guarantee have been in ‘Tops In Lex’ magazine without even looking it up. To gain access to the event, attendees could pay $5400 for entry and a photo, $1000 for entry but no photo with the presidential hopeful or for $30, you could just smell his hair.

During the visit, staff members at the Aviation Museum said the presumptive GOP time bomb seemed to be a little distracted.

“He kept asking over and over again about the private jet exhibit,” recalls Owen Thomas. “We explained what type of museum we were, informed him that there were no private jets and took him on the tour. However, he’d say, ‘I can’t wait to get to the private jet section. Are we there yet?’ pretty much every two minutes.”

Trump seemed to enjoy the tour and even stopped at the “women in aviation” exhibit to do a little campaigning for himself.

“Yeah, I don’t know about these lady pilots”, started Trump. “I prefer my pilots to be ones who successfully fly and land planes. Not like Amelia Earhart and that other broad who blew up the Challenger. But women are terrific. They really are. I love women. I think I’ll be great for women.”

Trump told the audience how much he loved Kentucky and bragged about the city of Lexington, which he now cites as one of his favorite towns to visit. Trump staffers said he loved all the historical sites he saw such as the Aviation Museum and Concourse B. It was also noted that he was really impressed with the small business owners of Lexington he met such as the guys at Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

After landing and collecting his cash, Trump gave his final farewell to his supporters who’d never been to a museum in their lives before yesterday. “It was great to be here this evening,” concluded Trump. “The museum is a little tiny and has some serious historical oversights but hey, not all of us have extra campaign funds to go to Eastland Shopping Center like crooked Hillary.”

Local Teen Accidentally Visits Grandma’s Nursing Home While Playing Pokémon Go

By: Harold Leeder

July 11, 2016

Local grandmother and Lexington’s lone ABC 36 watcher Mildred Rogers received a pleasant surprise Sunday afternoon when her grandson Caleb paid an unexpected visit to her residence at Morning Pointe Senior Living. However, unbeknownst to Mildred, Caleb was not there of his own accord or even at the behest of his parents, but was instead there playing Pokémon Go, a recently released augmented reality game for mobile devices.

“Honestly I had no idea that Meemaw Mildred lived here,” said a sweaty, and out of breath Caleb. “Me and some of my friends were just playing Pokémon Go across the street at Jacobson Park.  I’ve never been to one before, but I guess it’s where trees are born? We walked around everywhere, and my buddy Troy even went out on a paddleboat to catch one.  But it was pretty picked over, then I noticed this building across the street that I had never seen before, and it looked like there was a lot of Poké-activity taking place, so I decided to have a look.”

While his grandmother was eager to offer Caleb some hard candy, he seemed more interested in catching hard-shell Pokémon.

“Caleb’s always been my favorite grandson,” explained Mildred, “because he’s the only one that’s ever visited me. I’m just glad his phone was working, because it never seems to work when I try to call him.”

While Mildred was pleased at the rare site of a relative, Caleb was pleased with his haul for the afternoon.

“Yeah, overall I’m pretty happy with today’s results,” said Caleb. “This nursing home is just filled to the brim with candy and stardust. My only complaint is that the Pokémon here all smell bad.”
