Market Watch: Mad Mushroom Shares Plunge Over Summer

By: Harold Leeder

August 10, 2017

While many students are reluctantly preparing to go back to school next week the semester can’t start soon enough for Mad Mushroom’s stock holders. Investors are worried after a steep earnings shortfall in second quarter and the price of the stock has reflected the uncertainty. “Our business plan is really modeled on being open later than other places and the only people that are ordering pizza late into the night are students,” said store manager Shelia Crimini. “Students get drunk a lot further away from our flagship location during the summer, we still get some late night calls asking if we’ll deliver a super 20 to Ted’s Mom’s house in Dayton but you can only do so many of those in one night.”

Crimini continued, “the summer months have always been the slowest for us and our financial forecasts have predicted that, but now with Goodfellas opening and using a similar business model but serving a better version of our product things have been different.”

Mad Mushroom has not thrown in the towel yet though. They’re hoping to win back investors and settle the nerves of the current share holders by increasing their focus on pizza-adjacent foods. “We’ve gotten as good as we’re gonna get at Pizza, but we’ve got some other stuff we’re working on too. You may ask why does my enormous order of cheese sticks come with cups of pizza sauce and ranch dressing, and we ask why not? That’s the kind of ingenuity we bring to the pizza game.”

Applebee’s On Nicholasville Road Quickly Deletes Sarahah App

By: Harold Leeder

August 9, 2017

The Applebee’s on Nicholasville Road, ever the unwitting participants in their own slow decline, installed and then quickly uninstalled the new Sarahah app this week. The newest social media craze, an app that allows users to send anonymous messages to participants, was installed and shared via profile links along with their other regularly scheduled nap inducing Snapchat snaps briefly Tuesday afternoon. While the initial thought was that customers would be able to use the app to praise their favorite servers or provide constructive criticism, the Applebee’s crew was soon master-blasted by the reality that is today’s internet.

“The responses, they were really, really hurtful,” said server Bianca. A hostess named Daisey said, “This is the worst app decision we’ve made since rolling out our menu.” Any hopes at constructive criticism were smashed a mere minutes into the endeavor. The day shift manager Frankie agreed to read us a few of the messages the company received; “One guy wrote ‘Your steamed broccoli is gross.’ Uh, we never said it was good; we put that on there as a joke. Our motto is, if you’re ordering steamed broccoli at Applebee’s, you kind of deserve it.”

Frankie continued, “these are very unhelpful critiques. Like this one, ‘the food is terrible and the service is worse.’ Now, what am I supposed to do about that? Those are two things I cannot control. I mean we tried dressing it up. No one was ordering the mozzarella sticks or the grilled chicken, so we tried out a new dish where we put the mozzarella sticks on top of the grilled chicken. What else do you want from me? To hire a new staff and make better food?”

While the staff was disheartened by the messages most agree that this will not be a major setback for the business. One server said, “It’s so much easier dealing with these things online, the things people say to our face here, that’s much tougher to stomach. We’ve been turning the other cheek for years, so I think we’ll be ok.”

Windy Corner Market Cook That Called In Sick Yesterday Already Tired Of Hearing About It

By: Harold Leeder

August 7, 2017

Customers and employees at Lexington’s Windy Corner Market were treated to a surprise over the weekend when Amanda Bynes’ co-star in the critically acclaimed film She’s The Man, Channing Tatum, dropped by to have some pancakes. The reasons for the visit weren’t exactly clear; all that is known is that Tatum, winner of an Oscar for his performance in She’s The Man, was on the road promoting a new film about NASCAR so he decided to stop in the Lexington eatery and give a cook a signed motorcycle. We planned to ask Mr. Tatum how this publicity move plays into his promotion for the movie but he left after our third question about what it was like to work with Amanda Bynes in She’s The Man.

“Yeah, I guess he came in here over the weekend, it’s all anyone talks about now,” said chef Matt Cooke. “I’ve called in sick once since I started here over three months ago and this is what happens. And everyone knows I missed it and they just want to keep telling me about how I missed it. I get it. You know what people who missed something don’t want to hear about? The cool stuff they missed. I heard he even walked in here and said ‘man, after those flapjacks this place is about to be the broken wind corner market’ and everyone died laughing. I’ve made that joke every time someone orders pancakes here since June and never once has anyone laughed.”

“How is it that we have so little going on here that this is front page news? Not front page of the Entertainment section or something, but A1, above the fold, front and center. Absurd. We’re all about to lose our healthcare and this is all anyone cares about,” ranted Cooke, who routinely tries to impress people by telling them about the time he saw Steve Zahn at Kroger (Zahn has, to our knowledge, never appeared alongside Amanda Bynes for those readers wondering).

If anyone has any pictures from over the weekend with Mr. Tatum or any knowledge about how we could get in contact with Ms. Bynes please leave it in the comments below.

This Year’s Fancy Farm Downgraded To Ornate Farm

By: Harold Leeder

August 4, 2017

This weekend is Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm Picnic, a place where politicians from across the state gather to pander to crowds and pretend like they haven’t spent the last twelve months voting against the interests of all of the people in attendance. However, not all politicians are excited about the event. Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles, the ruler of farms in Kentucky, has finished his inspection of the venue and, sadly, has downgraded this year’s Fancy Farm to simply an Ornate Farm.

“Look, fancy is a pretty high standard. I don’t want to get into specifics but this isn’t even in the top five fanciest farms I’ve been to this year,” Quarles said. “Are the metal folding chairs nice? Sure. Are the decorative gourds and the guys with mutton chops eating chops of mutton cool? Heck yeah man, but are they fancy, well, no. I mean, you can’t call a place fancy and then serve a bean dinner.”

When asked what it would take for the farm to regain their status as ‘fancy’ Quarles said “There has to be an effort towards, not just decoration, but elegant, fanciness. Put out the nice boxed wine, use the good bingo dobbers. It doesn’t have to be the Palace of Versailles but you have to be nicer than the Palace of Winchester.”

Carmike Dollar Theater To Reopen With New Business Plan: 7 Dollar Theater

By: Harold Leeder

August 3, 2017

The Carmike 10 discount movie theater has been a staple for Lexingtonians that like to wait to see movies for a discount and then try to talk to their friends about the movie while their friends try desperately to remember details about the film they all saw at least 8 months prior. However, with the recent announcement that AMC Classic would be purchasing the theater, came news that the dollar theater concept was no more and would instead be replaced by a seven dollar theater model.

“Look, you can go to Regal in Hamburg or some place like that and shell out 12 smackaroos [sic] to see a movie or you can come here without all the frills and fancy seats and see that same film for four dollars less and only a few extra high school kids making out in the back,” said theater manager Kevin Welles. “Why get a Netflix account for around the same price, when you can come see these movies right when they come out but in vein of the classic movie theater experience of yesteryear. The one that featured uncomfortable seats, and old, run down equipment.”

While Carmike was once known as Lexington’s cheapest first date location, AMC Classic 10 is hoping to offer locals a more expensive way to show your date that you’re a cheapskate, “Sorry, maybe I’m not that regal, but who needs a fancy dining experience inside a movie theater? If you want I guess we can run across the street to Tandoor and bring you some Indian food? Maybe I just come from a time when we didn’t coddle our movie goers with leather seats and usable parking lots,” explained Welles. The twenty-seven year old manager concluded by shaking his head and letting out an exasperated “ugh, millennials.”

One patron told us, “I stopped by to check it out and was surprised to see newer films showing. It was definitely different than other theaters I’ve been to, kind of reminded me of olden times. It had the carbon monoxide levels of a drive-in but there were no cars.”

Andy Barr Refuses To Give Up His Seat To Female Veteran

By: Harold Leeder

August 2, 2017

Yesterday, in a video that circulated on social media and that I assured my wife that I’d watched, ex-marine Amy McGrath announced she was running for Congress, I’m very sure of it, because I totally watched it.

McGrath, who it is assumed is Mark’s wife, was wearing a pretty bad ass jacket as she walked around on a runway, talking about how important politics are nowadays.

“Today I’m asking for Andy Barr’s seat. Specifically his seat in Congress, not some seat on a bus or something,” explained the new candidate for what I think is like the real Congress, not the state representative kind.

Later, Barr tried explain why he wouldn’t give up his seat. “I’m sure she’s a terrific pilot, better than Red Baron pizza even, but that doesn’t mean I’m just going to give her my seat in Congress.”

McGrath said in her statement “Look, maybe I’ve had too many old fashioneds, but I like to think this is still a society where if a woman or a child needs a seat, you offer them yours.”

Throughout the video McGrath, whom you may remember from her breakout role as Ice Box in the film Little Giants, went right after the future former congressman. “Andy Barr, prepare to feel my McWrath,” she exclaimed as she placed a wicked cool fighter jet helmet on and gave the thumbs up to I’m assuming an air traffic controller.

“You ever see Top Gun? That’s pretty much my whole life,” is a good summation of what McGrath probably said toward the end of the pretty long video.

The following piece is a letter from our editor and thereby may not be as fact driven as the usual standard we strive to maintain.

Kroger Announces Last Minute Bid For Naming Rights Of New High School

By: Harold Leeder

July 31, 2017

Over the summer Fayette County Public Schools built a new addition, an $82 million dollar addition, and as the first day of school is right around the corner, they need to decide quickly on whether to Love It Or List It. While the school system is prepared to pay for the new school out of pocket (after what must have been a bigger than usual lottery season) some taxpayers are hoping the school district will listen to all financial offers before permanently settling on naming the school after Frederick Douglass.

“Here at Kroger we’re all about expanding our brand, and this high school is located in an area of town where we have no stores. The new location is almost 3 miles away from our nearest store, and we don’t want forgetting about us as a grocery option,” explained night shift supervisor Tim Kroger.

He added, “I tell our employees that we’re not in the grocery business, we’re in the people business.  Which is why we want our name out there on Stadiums, or schools, or buildings, anything really. However, we’re happy to offer new parents a small sum of money to name their child.”

“They’re out here doing what’s best for our community,” explained loyal shopper Clicklist Jackson, “I think the school district should take this money and put it back into improving the other schools.”

Jackson continued, “Look, what’s a better name for a high school? An abolitionist, social reformer, preacher, and a soldier in the fight for suffrage or the future employer of many of these students? We need the resources to pump out USDA Prime Choice Grade A students, and I need the fuel points.”

Bill Meck Spoils Gender Reveal Party With Accurate Prediction

By: Harold Leeder

July 28, 2017

World famous professional prognosticator Bill Meck unintentionally used his superpowers to ruin his niece’s gender reveal party last night.

Meck’s aggravated niece, Summer Jackson, explained through a sprinkling of tears, “We asked Uncle Bill to come enjoy the party, but the invitation came with the strict stipulation that he was not to announce his ‘guess’ to anyone at the party.”

An embarrassed Meck simply replied, “Boy oh boy is my face red! What can I say? I got caught up in the excitement, they were filming everyone’s guesses and I just got carried away.”

A now viral video shows Meck being politely prodded for his guess, and we see Lexington’s lovable weatherman, after a moment of internal struggle as he tried to suppress the urge to announce his prediction, stand up, and pull from his pocket a folded up green screen, only to place it on the living room wall behind him.

“He had a laser pointer and used it to point at different places on the green screen, however nothing was projected on it, like maybe he was gonna add the visuals later or something,” said a flustered, confused and irritated Jackson.

Meck defended the mistake, “Look we know the good Lord above gave me a gift and If God didn’t want me to use my powers of premonition at this party he wouldn’t have given them to me. We all knew there was at least an 80% chance I was gonna do this in the first place.”

“I know right now we’re expecting an ice cold front from the parents-to-be, but hey it’s not like I told them they were actually going to be having twins. Oh gosh, please don’t print that, I did not mean to say that,” added Meck as he chased us to our car.

Jim Gray Retakes Online Quiz Several Times Until Being Placed In Gryffindor

By: Harold Leeder

July 27, 2017

For many public figures, Facebook and Twitter activity reached an all-time, polarizing high yesterday, and no local politician’s account had as much activity as our former Vice Mayor Jim Gray’s. While some politically charged pundits crafted well thought out opinions, the rest just typing their thoughts in all caps, our newsroom kept seeing Facebook notifications from Gray, only to visit the page and see no new content.

“I wanted my post to be just right, and every time I posted, it was wrong so I took the post down and tried again,” Gray began his explanation for the disappearing statuses, “everyone knows I belong in Gryffindor, but I kept getting put in Ravenclaw on this darned quiz. Just a bunch of hufflepuff if you ask me.”

It seems Gray took a brief break from his standard afternoon routine of Facebook games, and while he waited for his friends to respond to the Dragon City and Bejeweled Blitz requests he’d sent out, he decided to keep himself entertained by finding out which Harry Potter house he’d be placed in.

“I was out of lives on Bejeweled and needed something else to occupy my brain for the next four minutes,” Gray said as he stared deep into the middle distance, looking in our direction but you could tell no true eye contact was being made, his eyes, sort of glazed over. “It’s a strange and dark time we live in, you can’t begrudge a guy from wanting to get away from thinking about the bi-partisan yelling and screaming, so what if I run off to Hogwarts for a minute to see where the sorting hat would place me.”

Gray shook his head, and laughed as he realized there were other people in the room, he made eye contact with a reporter and his pupils returned to their normal size, “Hahaha, oh and ol’ Steve Kay loves the books too, he’s a real Pot-head just like me, in fact I got hooked by reading the books to Steve every afternoon before his nap time.”

“Anyway, you were asking me something about Facebook? Oh, yeah, do I feel like it’s cheating to retake a quiz? No. There were a lot of answers where I could’ve gone either way. People change their minds you know,” an increasingly defensive Gray explained. “I’m a Gryffindor! Got it? Maybe it took a couple of tries but you don’t read a choose-your-own-adventure book once and throw it away! I’m a Gryffindor.”

Dan Issel Recalls “Drive-By And Just Drop The Ball In The Basket Challenge”

By: Harold Leeder

July 26, 2017

The ‘Drive-By Dunk Challenge’ is the latest phenomenon to hit social media and many current and former UK basketball personalities have been participating. A group of current players posted a video of themselves driving up to an unsuspecting basketball goal in the middle of a neighborhood and rushing out of the car to ambush the goal with dunks before hopping back in the car to drive away. Head Coach John Calipari even sort of got in on the action by partaking in the ‘Drive Up To Your Own House And Wait For The Gate To Close Behind You, Then Run Out And Dunk It On A Lowered Rim And Hope You Don’t Wake Up Your Wife Challenge.’

With alumni like Anthony Davis and De’Aaron Fox getting in on the action many were interested in seeing if one of UK’s oldest living superstars would be interested in joining in the fun. When asked if he would be participating, legend Dan Issel said, “Not a chance. You’ve got to understand, back in my day this drive-by dunk stuff wasn’t allowed. We had to drive up and then just drop the ball in the hoop. You see, grabbing the rim was illegal and not because of the trespassing.”

Issel continued his nostalgic tale, “Mike Pratt would drive us around and assistant coach Joe B. Hall, who was super into art and murals and stuff, would draw us doing layups. Then we’d take the drawings and show them to all our friends, when we saw them in person. That was how things went viral back then; that and not washing your hands.”

Issel isn’t the only former cat that won’t be participating in the challenge. Cameron Mills said he wouldn’t be joining in, on account of his not being able to dunk. “As soon as they come up with the 3-ball challenge or even the mid-range jumper drive-by challenge I’m in,” Mills said. “I’ll tell you this though, the next time I pass Regal Cinemas I’m gonna do the hashbrag [sic] ‘Drive-By Dunkirk Challenge’. Where you hop out, watch the entire film and get a refill on your large popcorn and then drive away.”
