Micah Harris Mistakenly Visits Botany Bay Seeking Help With His Garden

By: Harold Leeder

March 16, 2017

WKYT meteorologist Micah Harris was abuzz with excitement earlier this week when he paid a visit to The Botany Bay, innocently hoping the employees there could provide him with some expert tips for the vegetable garden he plans to grow later this spring, completely oblivious to the fact that the Botany Bay is actually a store that specializes in, well, you know.

The staff at the Botany Bay (conveniently located at 420 E New Circle Road, because, well, you know) seemed disoriented and slightly confused. Then Harris entered the premises seeking advice about growing garden vegetables, causing the employees to become even more dazed and disorganized.

“As a scientist myself, it’s always fun when I get to interact with scientists from a different field. Which is why I wanted to pick the brain of those botanists,” Harris said. “I’m hoping to have the best vegetable garden at WKYT this year, and I figure there’s no one that knows their way around greenery better than the fine botanical experts at the Botany Bay.”

Compelled to avoid disappointing Harris, employees tried their best to provide him with the help he needed. They gave him the phone number of a local gardening center while trying not to giggle every time Harris mentioned the words ‘cabbage’ and ‘lettuce.’

“I’m glad they gave me the information for another gardening expert,” Harris told us. “I feel like I came away with a really good contact.”

Jim Gray’s 2005 Tax Returns Show Excessive Spending On John Mayer’s Summer Tour

By: Harold Leeder

March 15, 2017

Former Vice Mayor Jim Gray’s 2005 tax returns were dramatically unveiled last night and while most of the revelations were very underwhelming and seemed to be fairly over-hyped, one thing did stand out. The then future vice mayor spent a significant portion of his personal income following then guitar phenom John Mayer on tour all summer.

The returns, probably obtained illegally, didn’t even seem to be newsworthy to most Lexingtonians, but that didn’t stop Tops In Lex TV from broadcasting them to white people everywhere.  Media outlets were hoping maybe the returns would reveal Gray wasn’t as rich as he claimed, though they weren’t entirely sure he ever even claimed to be rich.  Many viewers were left wondering who Gray was and if we should be allowed to see his tax returns without his permission.

“I have nothing to hide in these returns,” Gray said. “John is a great guitar player and puts on one heck of a show. I can only hope to one day be half the Mayer he is,” Gray then erupted into a fit of laughter, before humming the chorus to “Daughters” over and over.

Upon further research it seems Jim Gray supplied John Mayer’s 2005 Grammy campaign tour with several healthy donations.  “John kinda let me do whatever, I got to sit on stage with him and those other dudes in the trio a few times. In Raleigh, he let me play a clarinet solo, and before you know it he started calling me his ‘Vice Mayer’ and the rest is history.”

Gray was questioned on whether or not these leaked returns would have any lasting effects on his political career, “Boys will be strong and boys soldier on but boys would be gone without warmth,” but was cut off abruptly when we realized he was just quoting that song.

Coach Cal Tries To Convince His Team That Indianapolis Is A Fun Spring Break Town

By: Harold Leeder

March 13, 2017

As Joe Lunardi starts to look forward to a long summer, college students and more importantly student athletes are starting their spring break.  Some will choose to spend their hard earned spring vacation in exotic beach getaways where the water is still too cold to swim in and the sand has less broken glass than you’d expect like Myrtle Beach or Daytona.

However Kentucky’s basketball team has decided they’ll be spending their Spring Break in beautiful “downtown” Indianapolis.  Well actually the NCAA decided the spring break plans for Kentucky’s basketball team, and technically the plans for their fans as well.  The NCAA selection committee is responsible for deciding the destinations of all the basketball fans in America over the month of March.  With good reason as the committee is comprised of a group of white guys and one woman named Janet, most of whom have never played basketball, and yet every year are tasked with finding the best way to play a fair and balanced tournament that will decide the national champion for a sport they’ve seen a couple times on TV if and when their wife went to bed early.

Since the announcement of the NCAA tournament bracket, and the cementing of the basketball teams travel plans for the foreseeable future, Coach John Calipari is trying to make the best of it, just like the people that actually have to live in Indianapolis, Indiana year round.  Calipari addressed the media and his team with an excitement and joy that no one has ever had when speaking of Indiana, “They have go karts, and by that time it’ll be almost 40 degrees!”

Applebee’s On Nicholasville Rd Offering Steak Dinner To Any UK/NKU Fans Willing To Eat It

By: Harold Leeder

March 11, 2017

This past week, Northern Kentucky’s Jeff Ruby Steakhouse offered NKU students free steak dinners if the Horizon League Champions upset the second seeded Kentucky Wildcats. In a move lifted from the holster of Annie Get Your Gun, Malone’s in Lexington offered all UK students and faculty a free steak dinner if the cats go on to win their ninth NCAA championship this year. Now, the Applebee’s on Nicholasville Road is throwing their hat into the ring by offering a full-priced steak dinner to any UK or NKU fans willing to eat it.

“Look man, we’re non-partisan here at Applebee’s, the only sides we want to pick between are garlic mashed potatoes and four cheese mac and cheese.” manager Gary said. “We’re just looking for fans of either school who are willing to come in here and pay a very reasonable price for a ‘steak,'” he added while making virtual quotation marks in the air with his hands when he said steak.

Gary continued, “I can’t stress this enough, we’re not offering a free meal like those show offs in Cincinnatti or at Malone’s, but we are offering a 6 oz. USDA Choice Top Sirloin for $12.99, whether your team wins or loses, you just have to be willing to eat, at least most of it, without sending it back. Some people find it more rewarding to pay for their food than to freeload off the backs of college student-athletes. Regardless, come to Applebee’s and no matter how bad your bracket looks you’ll be feeling good in the neighborhood (at least until your food arrives).”

Lumber Liquidators Employee Still Not Sure How They Turn The Wood Into Liquid

By: Harold Leeder

March 10, 2017

After over a month on the job Lumber Liquidators employee Mark Bunyan still doesn’t completely understand what the company does. “It’s kind of confusing here,” Mark said. “I mean I come in here, push some papers around a desk and leave at five. I see some lumber come in here every now and then, but if we’re being honest I have no idea how they liquify it.”

Bunyan, who works in accounting, says he was given a tour of the facility when he started but still doesn’t seem to grasp the idea of liquidation. “We walked around but maybe they like to keep it a secret I guess? I’d really like to know, do they melt it, put it in some huge blender or something? I don’t know. Sure would like to learn how that wood juice gets made though.”

After reflecting on it for a few minutes Bunyan realized not only did he not know how the wood was liquified, he’d never even seen the finished product his company seemed to peddle. “What is liquid wood anyway? I’ve never seen it for sale. Is that sap? I don’t really know what sap is either. I might be in over my head here at this job.”

Bride-To-Be Secretly Hoping UK Loses Friday So People Will Come To Her Wedding Saturday

By: Harold Leeder

March 9, 2017

The dawn of Spring shines upon the commonwealth this weekend, marking a new beginning for many things in the bluegrass. The SEC Tournament, a new wedding season, and the antiquated practice of daylight savings time that allows our weekend to be cut an hour short regardless of whether or not you are a farmer.  No matter which new springtime event you’ll be celebrating this weekend, everyone can agree its inconvenient.  However, no one feels that more than bride-to-be Julie Potter.

Potter made the classic selfish mistake of planning her wedding day around the availability of the bridal party and close family, which inexplicably coincides with the end of college basketball season.  The wedding has a scheduled tip-off of Saturday at 1:30pm, and as the final touches of her wedding preparation are in full swing, Potter is beginning to notice many of her friends on snapchat are sending private snaps of posed photos with thermometers, overlaid graphics that say 0 MPH, and bowls of soup.

Last week Potter admitted to her friend Cheryl from work that she was hoping for a first round exit from the tournament, “I mean it doesn’t really matter how we do right? Like if we win or lose we’re still gonna end up playing in Memphis.  So can’t I just enjoy the day I’ve been dreaming about my whole life?  Can’t we just lose to Georgia or whatever and keep our potential two seed?”

Potter’s fiance Chad Roberts claims he wasn’t aware the wedding date would fall during the semifinals of the SEC tournament when he agreed to the wedding date last June.  “I just thought you know it was still the beginning of March, so we would be safe from any problems. Also with everyone leaving last year I didn’t know if we’d be any good.”

Roberts, clearly unaware of what Coach John Calipari has accomplished since coming to Kentucky, has been apologizing to his friends he hasn’t seen since college yet still feel obligated to come to his wedding, since late December.

Randy Smith, former room-mate of Roberts explained, “Yeah I mean he promised I could watch from my phone, and there’d be a full bar, but honestly I guess it just depends on what time we play on Saturday.”

Bill Meck Plans To Avoid Saying “Mother Nature” In Honor Of A Day Without A Woman

By: Harold Leeder

March 8, 2017

Today is International Women’s Day, and people across the globe are participating in A Day Without A Woman events to highlight the power and importance of women economically, socially, and politically. People can participate in multiple ways. Women can take the day off from paid and unpaid labor, avoid shopping for one day, or simply wear red to show support and solidarity with the cause. However, LEX 18 Chief Meteorologist Bill Meck will show his support in a different way, as he plans to avoid using the term “Mother Nature” throughout the day.

“It’s a big deal for Bill Meck to not say Mother Nature,” said one LEX 18 staffer. “There are stories from old meteorological mythology that suggest Bill was actually raised by Mother Nature.”

Meck has been searching all week for phrases to use in place of Mother Nature. He considered an assortment of synonyms, including Uncle Elements, Cousin Climate, and Family Friend Troposphere, but we’ve been told he will settle on using Old Man Atmosphere.

Other men around the LEX 18 studio will also participate in their own way. Alan Cutler plans to listen to Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” on repeat all day, while Kevin Christopher will use more makeup than usual on half of his face and then alternate between cameras reading the news by himself. Meanwhile, Lee Cruse plans to participate in A Day Without An HR Complaint.

The women of LEX 18 will be gathered at Dorian Craft’s house, where she has a marathon of HBO’s gritty crime drama The Wire planned. Steve Butera will also be there.

“I just really like The Wire,” Butera told us, “but Cutler keeps changing his HBO Go password.

Jim Gray Shuts Down Cartel In Columbia Steakhouse

By: Harold Leeder

March 6, 2017

Jim Gray made headlines this week by finally putting an end to one of the most notorious cartels in Lexington, the cartel running amok in Columbia Steakhouse. Gray was finally able to bring down Columbia Steakhouse kingpin Pablo “Nighthawk” Saladbar.

“They were using something called ‘Columbia Steak Express’ to distribute their product all over our good town, and that was just not acceptable,” said DEA (Digesting/Eating Animals) Agent Hank “Lamb Shank” Shrader. “They had runners taking steak and chicken all over this town. We busted a few distributors but we really needed to get the big dog himself.”

During one steakout at the home of the nighthawk, officers were shocked to find out the true ingredients of the establishment’s lamb fries. “This was just one of what we assume are many deceptions, I’m not sure what part of the lamb we thought this would be, but certainly not that,” explained Shrader.

“It’s rare to be able to pick up someone like this so we wanted to make sure we got our man,” former vice mayor Gray said. “This was a job well done.”

Winchester Begins Construction On Above Ground Centrepointe

By: Harold Leeder

March 3, 2017

Winchester’s former vice mayor Tim Slate thrilled residents this week when he unveiled a brand new, stunning, above-ground Centrepointe. While it won’t be filled with Ale-8 and open for swimming until after Memorial Day the buzz is already exciting residents across the town.

We spoke with a Winchester resident who insisted his name was only Carl (and then produced a driver’s license to prove he had no last name). Carl compared Winchester’s Centrepointe very favorably with Lexington’s, “Look, we’ll get ours up and going in a couple of days, just have to get an air compressor and inflate it. Y’all Lexington folk can fill yours in with parking garages or whatever, but us, we’re gonna fill ‘er up with Ale-8, straight from the hose, and watch them pretty girls walk by. We’re not lookin’ for world equestrian games, but we wouldn’t mind some Marco Polo.”

While many residents are excited about the potential for their Centrepointe in the summer months, former vice mayor Slate has made it very clear this is not just a seasonal project. “I know in Lexington they put up a big fence and then as soon as it gets under 50 degrees or over 54 degrees they’re not allowed to do any work on it but not us.”

Slate laid out his plans for a year round Centrepointe saying, “come next winter we’re gonna toss some bass in there and have some ice fishing.” When we asking if bass could survive in Ale-8 the former vice mayor pointed to a singing Big Mouth Billy Bass on his office wall and said, “I caught that last week.”

Former Vice Mayor Slate said “this thing is going to get better and better, after we do 8 years of construction, imagine how many decks and slides this baby is gonna have!”

Fan Assures Longtime Girlfriend He Too Will Propose When He Becomes Beloved UK Senior

By: Harold Leeder

March 2, 2017

Derek Willis’ proposal to his girlfriend was one of the more touching moments of this years’ basketball season, but it also caused a few uncomfortable looks to be exchanged between couples watching the event. After a few minutes of uncomfortable tension and stares, former college freshman Chad Goldman told his girlfriend of close to six years that “hey baby, I promise you I’ll propose on my senior night, right after I finish four hard years of basketball for UK. And the four years gotta be under Cal, you know, for us baby.”

Chad’s girlfriend, Teagan, said she’d been hoping for a proposal ever since Chad dropped out of UK before his sophomore year to pursue a career in delivering sandwiches freaky fast, but had recently started to lose hope that marriage was ever going to be an option. “When I saw that sweet moment, Derek dropping down on one knee like that, I thought, perfect, this is what Chad needs to plant the seed in his head.”

“I knew good and well what she was thinking during that proposal,” Chad said. “She was staring daggers through me. Derek Willis used to be my favorite player man, but he really hung me out to dry there.”

Since long before Tuesday night, Teagan has been supportive of Chad, but the constant replays of Ellen Calipari avoiding getting tripped by Willis, and the barrage of questions from her family about when Chad’s gonna finally pop the question has started to take it’s toll. However, she remains confident “their” day will come, “I mean I know it’s gonna happen for us, I just think the hardest part might be where Chad has to learn how to actually play basketball, and then get good enough to make the team, let alone get quality minutes.”
