Brad Calipari Plants Rose Bush For Mom, So Mother’s Day Gift Will Be Earned Not Given

By: Harold Leeder

May 12, 2017

Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, and while many Lexingtonians are planning to attend church for the first time since Easter and frantically trying to purchase flowers from Kroger, the first son of Kentucky Basketball has been prepared for this day for weeks now. Brad Calipari spent a weekend last month planting rose bushes in the Calipari’s backyard garden. His plan is to give his mother, Ellen Calipari, a card Sunday morning informing her of the roses and giving detailed her detailed instructions on how to care for them.

“Look, I could be like everyone else and just pick up a bouquet from a florist or order some from Pro Flowers or something but that’s the easy way out,” Brad said. “On the other hand, if she has to water and care for these flowers to get them she will cherish them even more. These flowers will be earned, not given. Trust me, I know, it feels much better to work for something and know that it wasn’t just given to you, that you earned it. I think she’s really going to appreciate this gift.”

When reached for comment, Coach John Calipari said “Ellen is the type of mom that will be the first to get in the garden and the last to leave.  She’ll put in the work.” Calipari checked over his shoulder to see if anyone was listening then concluded “I think Ellen will be happy with anything that doesn’t include another Brad tattoo.”

Lexington Hopeful President Will Fire Up Some Coneys At Gold Star Chili

By: Harold Leeder

May 11, 2017

President Donald Trump’s newest episode of The Apprentice sent shock waves through the country when he fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday night.  Many Americans were seen reacting with anger, some with confusion, and a few even happily celebrated the decision. However, both sides of the political aisle were able to meet in the middle on one reaction to the news, which is that since then, they’ve had a hankerin’ for some coneys.

While in the bushes near the White House, we’ve heard the President’s Press Secretary shrug off accusations of foul play, or that the firing of the FBI director was meant to in some way subvert an ongoing investigation of the President himself. However, there’s one thing the President or I can’t shrug off, and that’s this constant craving for cheese, chili, and onion covered hot dogs that sits deep within our stomach, ney our soul, and sticks to the lining of our very being.

Many believe that the coney craving is a primal one, but it’s important to remember that not just any coney will do.  This country deserves the best from it’s leadership, and from it’s coneys.  So in this time of need, we should turn our sights to Gold Star Chili.  Here at Gold Star the coneys begin with quality, because here we all know that the hot dogs come from Bluegrass quality meats, and are served in those perfectly sized Klosterman buns that are small enough to fit into a child’s or President’s hands. Then are topped with just a hint of mustard that your palate will remember long after you’ve finished your first three. Oh, but I mean, yes, there are many who are worried about the President’s seemingly quick decision to fire the FBI director, as it came as a shock to even James Comey himself. Although, America has never been shocked by how delicious that Gold Star’s famous Cincinnati-style chili can be. Let alone if you allow it to mix atop a tiny hot dog, with chopped onions, and finely grated cheese, piled high above each coney with care. In fact, that chili has been known to go good on anything. Spaghetti, or salad if you’re someone that can’t enjoy life to its fullest. Bipartisan politics aside we’re all hopeful the President or anyone wanting to learn more about the FBI or whatever, will come fire up some coneys sometime soon at any of Lexington’s 4 convenient Gold Star Chili locations.  It’s time we let our taste buds take a vacation to Cincinnati.

Bevin Submits Pretty Pretty Freakin’ Sweet Audition Tape For FBI Director

By: Harold Leeder

May 10, 2017

The governor’s offices were closed for an hour this morning as Matt Bevin told staffers he would need a quiet and empty office because he would be shooting his audition video for the newly open position of FBI Director. When news of former FBI Director James Comey’s firing broke yesterday the governor said he knew exactly what he needed to do.

“Look, it’s no secret around here that I would love to be FBI Director. I know the best way to get anything in life is an audition video. Most people just send in a resume, but what gets more attention, a piece of paper that says I used to own a bell factory, or a video of me jumping a motorcycle over that burning factory?” Bevin said.

This isn’t Bevin’s first audition tape either. “I’ve sent in audition videos for all kinds of stuff. I sent in a video for the first season of Big Brother, and if you think about it, the FBI and Big Brother are kind of the same thing. Once I’m done editing though, the video I made today will be less like my Big Brother audition tape and probably closer to the one I submitted in ’97 for The Real World.”

The Governor, still dressed in his ‘Female Body Inspector’ t-shirt from his morning taping, concluded by saying “I think I’m a shoe in for this. I mean, I’m not super qualified or anything, but I’ve supported the president at a few rallies and that’s really the only job qualifications you need.”

Starbucks To Welcome 5,000 New Full Time Employees Following UK Graduation

By: Harold Leeder

May 8, 2017

The University of Kentucky held ceremonies this weekend to hand out diplomas to the newest batch of college educated job applicants ready to enter the workforce. Many local companies are looking to pounce, ready to hire fresh, enthusiastic new employees and the newest batch of graduates, looking for any sort of full time employment in their chosen field to help pay down student loans, are chief among the applicants that these companies will not be considering.

“We’re always looking for new talent,” said an HR representative from one of Lexington’s largest employers. “We are actually looking to fill a number of entry-level positions right now, all applicants need to do is send over a resume showing they have at least five years of full-time experience in the field.”

“I’m just trying to weigh all my options right now,” said recent graduate and future barista Tristan. “My parents said if I just walk into a business, hand my resume to the receptionist and I should expect to get a job paying in the mid-five-figures within a week. They always say ‘you’re a college graduate now, that means something out there’ but I guess they didn’t see the other 5,000 people that walked on stage before me to get the same diploma.”

Tristan went on to explain “my grandfather is even worse, I’ve tried to explain to him that milkman is no longer even a job so it doesn’t matter how much money he made doing that growing up. Also, he said he majored in milk at Transy, it might be time to put him in a home soon.” When it comes to the job market though Tristan said most students are just looking to make next month’s rent payment. “I’d love to have a career but I’d love to have a place to live next week more so I’ll probably just take the first offer I get. I heard Starbucks pays about $8 an hour and panhandling can make about $9 just starting out. Starbucks feels more professional though, especially since it’s only kind of food service. I worked hard for four years so that I wouldn’t end up at an Applebees.”

Students are not totally on their own after graduation; UK does their part in placing graduates in the work force when they can. This year over 50% of graduates with a degree in Agricultural Leadership will find jobs playing basketball professionally. The students seemed optimistic though, many proudly wore “Class of 2017” shirts emblazoned with the slogan: “There are over 5,000 UK graduates this year, and most of us will go pro in something other than whatever our major was.”

City To Address Panhandling Problem By Staging Gladiator Fights In CentrePointe

By: Harold Leeder

May 4, 2017

Last week, the city of Lexington launched its “End Panhandling Now” initiative, a jobs program that picks up panhandlers in former vice mayor Jim Gray’s old Chevy Astrovan and lets them clean up trash around the city for a massive pay cut of $9 an hour. This week the city will be implementing phase two of the program, which involves staging large-scale gladiator fights in CentrePointe between any panhandlers whose “Stranger Danger” instincts prevent them from accepting rides from weird vans with blacked out windows.

“Not only will this put an end to the extremely minor inconvenience that panhandling causes, but it will also finally allow us to put CentrePointe to good use,” said a press release.

Combatants in the events will choose weapons ranging from swords and supersoakers to shields made of cardboard. They’ll also be able to take advantage of the surroundings that CentrePointe provides, as they can grab handfuls of dirt or gravel to throw at their opponent ‘s eyes as a last ditch effort for victory. They’ll fight each other until one tires out, at which point future former vice mayor Steve Kay will give a thumbs up or thumbs down to determine their fate.

Depending on the success of the gladiator program, the city could continue to expand its efforts to bring an end to panhandling. Other potential options include a Running Man style race through the streets of Lexington, a Hunger Games style event in Jacobson Park, or a Most Dangerous Game style hunt that would allow wealthy citizens of Lexington to pay for the opportunity to track and subdue panhandlers at one of the city’s private golf courses.

Derby Hopeful Girvin Concerned His Boring Backstory Will Hurt Screen Time

By: Harold Leeder

May 3, 2017

Many of the 24 horses vying for the crown of Kentucky Derby champion come from thrilling backgrounds all looking to fulfill an impossible dream. Hard luck found the likes of Gunnevera as his trainer was kidnapped twice in Venezuela, Patch lost an eye in a saloon just south of Bloody Breathitt County, and Looking at Lee has been forced to look at a picture of Lee Cruse his whole life.

However, one horse in particular has become nervous about their own life story, as the start of the run for the roses is closing in. Girvin, a horse from a particularly boring background, begins his Derby preparation this morning with a bucket of oats and a swift jog around the track. “I like to keep it simple, and keep my training the same, no surprises. Oatmeal works and it helps with an unsettled stomach, the…” Girvin explained for what felt like an hour.

“Look, maybe I don’t have the exciting background as some of these guys, but I’ve worked just as hard to get here, and it’s my dream just as much as theirs,” the horse no one, other than its own mother and NBA legend George Gervin, will be rooting for this Saturday.

“I’m sorry, I had pretty good grades in school and was active in the community donating my time to charities instead of off doing drugs or losing my eye in a gang fight,” soured the one derby horse without a real personality of his own. “Sure everyone here has their own unique story but frankly I’m sick of them. Like we all know Gormley was an extra in Lord of The Rings, and I swear to Elmer himself if I have to hear that story one more time, I’m gonna throw a shoe.”

Chris Bailey Uses Incognito Mode To Google Bill Meck’s Weather Secrets

By: Harold Leeder

May 1, 2017

While most people use Google’s Incognito mode to hide questionable internet searches from their spouses while their ISP still sells the information to advertisers anyway, Chris Bailey apparently used the covert browser to Google the weather secrets of his fiercest rival Bill Meck, sources confirmed.

“Lexington weather is a lot like that movie The Prestige,” said a source. “Bailey and Meck are always trying to one up each other and learn the other person’s tricks, and Meck has a secret twin brother he uses to perform some of his more unbelievable weather predictions.”

Bailey rose to popularity after sawing a cloud in half and is constantly looking for an edge against his meteorological rival. He knows the importance of keeping this sensitive material close to the vest. It’s still unclear what secrets Bailey may have discovered while Googling, but he used Incognito mode so he wouldn’t leave a trail for Micah Harris.

Base Camp Opens Under The Summit At Fritz Farm

By: Harold Leeder

April 28, 2017

If you’ve been near the corner of Nicholasville Road and Man O’ War recently, you’ve probably noticed an influx in tents, camping stoves and people wearing clothes you’d wear on a boat with hard hats at the same time, as high-end shoppers prepare for the long and treacherous journey over the very flat land to the somewhat inexplicably named “The Summit” shopping center.

It may seem unusual for shoppers to have to take such precautions to visit a new shopping center, but please know that shoppers have been advised to find a tour guide and work in groups to navigate The Summit as only about a tenth of the stores are currently open and much of the area is still a very active construction zone. Many shoppers embraced the challenge though, Karen Blanc told us, “It’s exciting, you know. How often do you get the chance to shop for expensive, chic clothing while also getting to dodge construction equipment. Very exciting.” After talking to some of the shoppers, The Summit’s new slogan “10% of the shopping, 100% of the danger” makes a lot more sense.

It seems that the owners rushed the opening of the shopping center, presumably to attract some high-end horse people (people that like horses, not centaurs, common mistake) before Keeneland ends it’s spring meet, hoping that they could grab some of that sweet horse cash before it flies back to Saudi Arabia. The Summit at Fritz Farm now joins Centrepointe in the growing list of projects in Lexington that were unsuccessfully rushed to completion to try and meet horse industry deadlines.

Jim Gray Revokes Sir Pizza’s Knighthood After Recent Delivery Takes Two Hours

By: Harold Leeder

April 26, 2017

Sir Pizza of South Broadway, the once gallant knight of teeny tiny pepperonis, faced debasement yesterday after former vice mayor Jim Gray’s dinner showed up over two hours late. Gray cited last night’s delivery as the straw that broke camel’s back, as it was just another example of their serial tardiness and an abject disregard of human rights.

The now former Sir, had earned the esteemed honor a little over four years ago, when it managed to pull a sword from a pizza stone. The legendary act was recognized by Gray himself at an official ceremony of knighthood downtown. However brief, the knighthood meant a lot to the location, which had started out as just a Popeye’s Chicken but evolved into a restaurant worthy of receiving the honor that is reserved for only those of the highest order. Which Sir Pizza found easy to come by as it was usually those who were highest that ordered from there.

On the heels of revocation the debased pizzeria is still hopeful of an eventual redemption. Store manager Lance Sallot proclaimed “We will bounce back, we’ve faced a lot of adversity it the past, but for now we shall seek solace in Camelot,”  then muttered, “east” under his breath.

Editor’s note: For story reasons we traveled with the staff to both Camelot East and West only to discover they were both closed permanently.  So we just dropped them off in the parking lot of The Castle Jewelry And Pawn on Richmond Road.

March For Science Followed By March For Algebra, Then P.E.

By: Harold Leeder

April 24, 2017

Crowds in the tens or maybe even hundreds (there’s no way anyone could really tell) supporting all things dork, sloshed through downtown Lexington on Saturday afternoon, in the somehow politically charged “March For Science.” The naturally timid crowd marched through downtown early in the morning, with signs that read “Wait til Isaac Discovers Newtown Pike” and “Archimedes Nuts”.

Shortly after the march ended, a new crowd gathered and began marching in the opposite direction in the “March For Algebra”, the group was made up by many of those involved with the science march, but other nerds joined in with newly inked sines that read, “Can’t Solve Inequalities Without Algebra” and “Euclid Ave Sucks But Euclid The Dude Was Cool.” Then just before lunch, the group attended P.E.

While many claimed the two marches were probably enough exercise for the day, the group reluctantly lent their support to the Physical Education cause anyway. Signs included “Official Member of the P.E. N Fifteen Club ” and “It’s time to put the CAT back in Physical Education” read one weird lady’s sign who was walking a cat on a leash for some reason.

Few opposed the “March For Science” outside of a small group of wizards, witches, and street magicians, who hope the de-funding of scientific endeavors allows more government contract work for sorcerers.  Lexington’s most notable science detractor Harry Vasemaker still attended the speeches that followed the march, but had trouble getting a good vantage point with all the signs in the crowd. He claims one woman in particular stood directly in front of him with a rather large sign that just read “SCIENCE” in bold print, “She blinded me.”

Shortly after the speeches concluded, protesters had to return to their homeroom march before they were dismissed for the day.
